The High River Balloon Festival is an example of events started by one group.

The Town of High River is implementing a new project to support community groups in planning and putting on events whether they're new or already in place.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says often times people don't know where to go to get help.

"I see a lot of people that just think if you have an idea you send the mayor an e-mail and it should all be taken care of with-in 24 hours," he says. "It's very important that the community steps up and takes ownership of these events."

He says one good place to go is Our High River, going so far as to say after he's done with being mayor it's one group he wants to see continue.

With funding from the Calgary Foundation, the town's also hired Breakthrough Communications" to help community groups identify their needs and come up with strategies to put on their events.

"There's things that the town does and the local government does very well, and there's other things that we don't do very well," Mayor Snodgrass says. "There's a few key events that we want to prioritize and really focus on the do them tight, there's a lot of other things that volunteer groups can take on."

He used the Little Britches Parade and the Christmas parade as great examples of people stepping forward and starting events that have continued with out the town being directly involved.
