Technically there's less than 40 days till Christmas but with the weather being as nice has it has been lately in the Foothills, it couldn't be a better time to put up your lights in the last few + temperature days we have left before it gets too cold to hang your lights.

Before you untangle all of the lights and switch out bulbs, there's some safety tips for Christmas lights that the Okotoks Fire Department wants to remind you of.

Deputy Fire Chief Pat MacIssac says first off, when hanging lights where a ladder is needed, you shouldn't be doing it by yourself.

"If you're going up on the ladder, make sure its the proper ladder that you've got good footing for the ladder have somebody stabilize the ladder that its not going to be slipping when you're up trying to up the Christmas lights and make sure you're using the appropriate lights for indoor and outdoor use," he says.

MacIssac gives out another important tip that you should keep in mind when you're keeping your light cord from dangling.

"Sometimes people put staples or nails through the cords on the light, that can cause a problem, it can actually start a fire if the nail is too close to a wire."

MacIssac says he remembers another experience on a Christmas light fire call that could give people another reminder of what not to do with their lights.

"The home occupant had wrapped Christmas light around a television that cause the TV to overheat and start a fire so keep Christmas lights away from electronic is another safety measure as well."
