The Highwood Memorial Centre

The Highwood Memorial Centre board is looking to upgrade the seating in the hall for big events.

Wade Nelson says it's all because the fire code has changed.

"We need to buy new chairs and it's something we need to upgrade the chairs anyway so to raise some money we're asking for donations of $25 a chair," he says. "That gets you a name plate on the back, similar to how it's been done before. The chairs that were donated in the past there's a one inch by two inch name plate customized to whatever the donor wants to put on there.

He says with the new code the chairs have to e able to be linked together like long benches or pews so that in an emergency they aren't scattered everywhere getting in the way of people being able to get out.

There are clips that are available but he says they're prone to breaking and since the chairs in the hall now are over 20 years old it's time to replace them. At the Remembrance Day ceremony the chairs were kip tied together which meant a lot of extra work and a big clean up after the event was over.

Nelson says they want to buy 800 chairs so they need to raise $20,000.
