A little rain didn't dampen spirits for the first Hike for Hospice this weekend.

What was originally expected to bring out about 100 people saw over 425 participants take part in the walk through Okotoks.

Betty George, fund development officer at the hospice, says the support for the hospice surpassed her expectations.

"This blows me away, the fact that I thought at the very beginning that we could have 100 people come out, 100 people that may be effected by hospice that want to come out and support us, but there's people in this crowd that have heard of the hospice, that have maybe not heard of the hospice, that are taking part as a community and supporting us. It's just an amazing feeling."

George says the event wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for the volunteers and sponsors.

"Big shout out to all of them for making this happen. For the sponsors who paid for this so we could have an event that cost was virtually nothing, that every dollar raised could go directly to patient care so we can take care of patients out there, and the volunteers that are doing this and all because we're so passionate about the hospice."

The Hike for Hospice raised over $52,000, all of which is going back into the facility and its patients.
