A hockey community is devastated after Saturday's crash near Carseland.

16 year old Markus Lavallee and his grand-mother were killed after a cement truck collided with their car on Highway 817 late Saturday afternoon.

Lavallee had just finished his rookie season with the CFR Chemical Bisons AMHL team, where he'd won a league championship, regional title and an appearance at the Telus Cup in Quebec.

Lavallee was from Strathmore, and looking forward to starting his junior career with the Whitecourt Wolverines of the AJHL this fall, but instead his teammates and community will be playing for him this coming year.

Bisons General Manager Wayne Hansen says Lavallee's death is still hitting home for many.

"Marcus, he always had a smile on his face," he says. "He was the happiest guy in the room, just loved the game of hockey, loved being at the rink, just truly enjoyed his time with his teammates."

There's been nothing but support for Lavallee's family and teammates whether through social media remembrances or a simple phone call.

Hansen says that's what makes the hockey world special.

"The great thing the hockey community is just they rally around everybody," he says. "I know even though our players are scattered all over the place, as word started to get out this morning, most of them headed here to town to get together, just to be there for each other."

Hansen says there's no doubt there will be extra dedication this season in honor of Lavallee's life and career and the Bisons and the Lavallee are thankful for the community's support.

"The phone calls we've recived, just the outpouring of support through social media and everything, this is every parents worst nightmare just that outpouring from the hockey community is going to help the process along.
