Question period in the legislature was cancelled Wednesday because of the wildfire situation in Fort McMurray.

Members were able to speak and Livingstone MacLeod Wildrose MLA Pat Stier spoke about the fire situation.

Stier says he's been pleased with the response to the disaster.

"We've got 22 aircraft available up there, we've got in the neighbourhood of around nine or ten of those that can fly at one time depending on the smoke in the area and we've got four hundred first line firefighters, a lot of these different structural fire experts are coming form other cities and towns in Alberta to respond," he says.

Stier's happy that members of the Willow Creek Fire Department in his riding are already on the scene helping out.

In an open letter to constituents Stier says the floods in southern Alberta in the past have made everyone aware of what needs to be done in a time of need.

"From the experience we had in High River in both 2005 and 2013 we noted with other disasters around the province, that the Red Cross seems to be the best way to go and cash seems to be the best way, although clothing donations and all those things are appreciated if they're clean and ready to go, they're harder to manage and cash does work the best," Stier says.

He says MLA offices across the province are open and willing to help out in any way they can including offering phone numbers or contact information to people on how they can donate or assist.

Wildrose Leader and Fort McMurray – Conklin MLA Brian Jean, and MLA for Fort McMurray – Wood Buffalo Tany Yao are in Fort McMurray, and offering supports as the provincial representatives for the area.

The provincial government says it will match contributions to the charity.
