Summer is finally here and with the mountains so close a lot of folks are getting outdoors to hike.

When planning a trip out West it’s important to remember trail safety, especially with wildlife out for the warmer months.

With an increasing amount of bear sightings within Banff and the surrounding area one particular run in is hitting close to home.

Blair, a Calgary resident, had quite the scare recently while on a hike with a youth group in Kananaskis Country.

"Myself and another team took them for a back country hike. It was 5 kilometres in and we were being tracked by a bear. When we realized what was happening we found a food drop, to keep the food from bears, and we climbed up into it and used a satellite phone to call a ranger for help."

Two hours later park rangers came to the rescue and put the bear to sleep, getting the group out of the predicament.

When asked if the situation was scary, Blair said, "It for sure was. These kids that we had with us they are kids at risk so you can imagine the stories they will be telling their friends....I’ve been out a couple of times. This has never happened."

Blair frequents the mountains on occasion but has never had an encounter like this before, "I have never even heard of anything like this before. It was an experience and I just wanted to share it."

Alberta Parks informs the public that if ever encountered by a bear it's best to stay calm as any loud noises or sudden movements can trigger an attack.

In addition, never run away from the bear, be human, do this by speaking calmly and firmly to indicate you are not prey.

To avoid bears all together remain alert while out on the trails, shout/sing regularly and keep your eyes peeled for fresh bear signs.
