Motorists will be adjusting to a speed limit change on Highway 552.

The road, just east of the Okotoks overpass, is being reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.

Drew Chipman, assistant superintendent with the Foothills School Division, says the lower speed limit is the result of a joint effort.

"We've been lobbying along with Christ the Redeemer School Division and the MD of Foothills to lower that down to 60 km/h. The MD, Mayor Spilak, Monica Kohlhammer (director of planning for FSD), along with CTR have done great work in making sure that message was sent to Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Transportation and they certainly responded and we're very pleased."

He says the process of reducing the speed limit began as early as March/April.

Chipman adds parents voiced concerns over the old speed limit.

"We've expressed it, we've had parents express that to us, it's been expressed to the MD of Foothills council as well, so it's something we think is very beneficial especially with all the new traffic with St. Francis of Assisi opening up this fall."

Updated signs with the new 60 km/h speed limit will be posted in the next couple weeks.
