Soup was on the menu at the Turner Valley Legion this Sunday, January 29.

The group Soup Sisters met for the first time this year and whipped up four soups to be delivered to the Rowan House Women's Emergency Shelter.

Soup Sisters coordinator for the region, Betty Foran says they always have a diverse group of people that volunteer their time.

"We have people come and each of these people pay $55 to make soup for Rowan House which allows us to buy all fresh ingredients. And a lot of this group is from a vet clinic in Calgary which is wonderful. We have lots of people come out from Calgary but we have a lot of local groups that participate too, its a great team builder, or a sports team builder or just a great way to meet new people."

Sunday's group made 60 litres of soup with options such as: minestrone, hamburger, chicken noodle and a meatless chili for the shelter to enjoy and also got to sit down and taste their creations with a side salad.

Foran says there are a number of places the soup goes to use.

"They use it in shelter, plus they might take it out to their outreach clients or we have a healthy relationships class where the moms come in and the kids are there to be babysat and we serve them soup there as well."

The Soup Sisters are very thankful for the extra hands as, Foran says, it helps with finances at the women's shelter.

"It's wonderful, it really helps with the food budget at Rowan House because when you have 24 people in a house for a year our groceries could cost us up to $60,000 so this is just one way to cut down the cost."

Soup Sisters tries to meet up at least five times a year as their delivery usually lasts about two months.

Their next meet up is scheduled for March 26, at the Millarville Race Track.
