Okotoks residents had the recently had the opportunity to help make Canadian history.

The Town of Okotoks is one of the 17 communities in Alberta selected to create a cross country mosaic mural to commemorate Canada's 150th Birthday.

Members of the community had the chance to paint a four by four inch tile to leave their mark.

Organizer Denise Lefebrve said the work will account for 450 to 575 of the tiles for the project which Canadians across the country are participating in.

"We are here to do a mural mosaic for your community, we've been going across Canada for the last year, and we've got another year to go to celebrate Canadas 150," she says. "So this mural and 149 others are going to create one big mural, which will come together to create one giant train."

Lefebvre adds not only will the mosaic be a part of Canadian history, it will actually make it too.

"In actual size it would be a mile long, so it's Guinness Book of World Records big, that's why we're taking a few years to do it. There will be over 100,000 participants in the end, and we're going from coast to coast."

The final mosaic will be unveiled at the Okotoks Art Gallery during a ceremony on June 10 and will remain on display throughout the summer. It will be permanently on display in the lobby of the Pason Centennial Arena expansion when it opens.
