If you were unfortunate enough to be out in the cold Friday morning in the foothills, you may have cast your gaze skywards. The pleasant surprise you would have seen is called a "Sun Dog".

When the air gets as cold as it has been lately, the sun refracts light through ice crystals in the air which act like prisms. This creates a rainbowed halo effect, or Sun Dogs, and that was the angelic aura that we saw over town.

Perhaps there are some upsides to cold weather after all.
