Skate Mania is off to another great start, as over 40 of High River's youth showed up to its first event this year on June 10.

The event takes place every other Wednesday at the skate park where people can come test out their skateboarding skills.

Organizer and youth liaison worker for the Town of High River, Kalie Mosig, says there's also free food, music and prizes.

"Each event will have the block-part trailer at it, and that includes the barbecue, so we have free food and it's sponsored by a variety of different community groups," she says. "We also have prizes each week. At the last Skate Mania, we were lucky to get some really cool donations from West 49 and Salad Skateboards in Calgary."

Mosig says this idea came out of a need for more activities for High River's youth.

"I guess there are a lack of social things for youth to do and we've tried a variety of different things, like putting on an event at a coffee shop, but what we're finding is if we can meet the youth where they're already naturally going and wanting to hang out, then that works so much better."

The next Skate Mania takes place on Wed. June 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and all ages are welcome to come out and watch or participate.
