Getting kids safely to and from school is a top priority for RCMP.

High River Staff Sergeant Robin Alexander reminds drivers the speed limit in school zones is 30 kilometres an hour from an hour before school starts until an hour after it ends.

"One of the other issues that we find is that children are exiting in an unsafe fashion from their vehicles and I've actually experienced this, where they've come out into the street into the driving lane of traffic and a best practice would be to have them exit on the sidewalk side, obviously, away from the street," she says.

He says they get as many complaints about the driving habit of parents dropping their children off to school or picking them up as they do about the general public.

"We all have a responsibility here to make sure our children are delivered and picked up safely from our schools in town and we avoid potential tragedies," Staff Sergeant Alexander says.

He says RCMP will employ high visibility patrols in schools zones and suggests if you don't have to be there it's best if you stay away from the congestion.
