The Foothills School Division is reviewing their safety protocols after a natural gas line was cut at Foothills Composite High School on Tuesday, March 7, during construction and the students and staff had to be evacuated.

The Foothills School Division's Assistant Superintendent of Corporate Services Drew Chipman says the situation was handled very well, but is being reviewed.

"We were very happy with how things transpired from once the incident occurred to getting the students out of the school," Chipman said.

"We are very excited about how it worked, we are not so excited about the incident itself, but we are dealing with that as well."

He added when you are in the middle of a modernization there are lots of things that can happen.

"Everybody acted like they should, the fire alarm was pulled, people were notified immediately, students and staff exited immediately."

The school is undergoing a $23-million upgrade and the emergency was handled exactly the way it was supposed to.

"Things are going to occur. Safety is paramount in our minds," Chipman said.

He is making sure all the processes and procedures are in place, and that everyone knows how to act.

"We want to make sure we are limiting any future incidents. That is what we are striving to do at this point."
