The Prime Minister has spent the last week or so replenishing the Senate.

He's named 21 people to the Upper House and Foothills MP John Barlow says not much has changed from the way it's been done in the past.

"Certainly they're not going anywhere near electing Senators and their supposed to be independent, but we'll just have to wait and see, I've very reluctant to believe that these new appointments are going be independent," he says. "I think when push comes to shove they're going to lean toward Liberal policies, you certainly look at their resumes, they certainly come from that academic, left leaning background."

There are now 44 independent Senators, 40 Conservatives and 21 others who consider themselves Liberals, but were kicked out of the party caucus by the Prime Minister.
