A local fundraiser is looking to help people who were devastated by the September Mexican earthquakes.

Liz Vigueras with iRERi Smiles Mexican Association said she has friends and family in Mexico City and in the rural areas so she has heard first hand how difficult the situation is right now.

"I have friends and family in Mexico city and outside the city I have a lot of connections with poor people because I use to be a volunteer working there teaching."

She is partnering with the High River Rotary Club to get some cash to the areas of Morelos, Puebla and Oaxaca states.

Rotarian Wally Gardiner says they have started a Piggy Bank fundraiser.

"Rotary is working together with Liz to garner some funds to send directly to Rotarians."

The Rotary Club is also planning a long term project to help with education, clean water, maternal health and rebuilding.

There are several locations in High River to donate cash to the Piggy Bank fundraiser including the Charles Clark Medical Clinic, Western Financial, John Andresen’s Law office, the Sari Sari store, Lorac Management and the Museum of the Highwood.

Gardiner adds there are great needs in the rural area for the basic survival needs like shelter and food.

Donations can also be mailed in to Carol Lyall, Box 45089 High River AB T1V 1R7 or you can send it electronically using the email carol@laracmanagement.ca
