The Okotoks Pro Rodeo is working to brighten the day for children with special needs in the Foothills.

The Magic Rodeo is working in conjunction with local agencies to give children their own fun and personal rodeo experience.

Mike Labelle, one of the event's organizers, says participants will be able to try their hand at milder rodeo events.

"We're going to do a little bit of roping or give them the opportunity to ride a horse, get on a little bit of a 'bucking' teeter totter, pet some animals, and just let them feel like they are a part of the rodeo."

Kids will also get to meet some of the pro rodeo talent including cowboys, cowgirls, and reigning rodeo queens.

Labelle says this isn't the first time this event has taken place.

"It's unique but it's something that's come back. We used to have something like this at the Okotoks Pro Rodeo and they do them at a lot of other rodeos as well. It's just a different way to give back to the community and to kids."

Labelle says the event has received a lot of support from the Foothills and from sponsors.

Child who attend the Magic Rodeo will receive lunch, a t-shirt, and a cowboy hat.

The rodeo takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sat. Aug. 29 at the Okotoks Recreation Centre.
