If you have a lead foot, you may want to reign it in a little as first responders are promoting safe driving for National Traffic Safety Week.

High River RCMP Sergeant Ryan Dlin says Road Safety Week is a joint effort to promote and monitor safe driving.

"It's just a focus on traffic safety where we as a detachment in conjunction with our municipal enforcement and traffic service partners pay extra attention to the highways and secondary roads."

Not a minute too late either, as the May long weekend is coming up.

Dlin says traditionally they see more drivers speeding and dangerous driving.

"It is road safety week and of course we're going into the May long weekend as well so you can expect to see additional patrols on the roads".

Speeding is easy in many newer vehicles, so Dlin says it's important to stay focused, not be distracted and check your speed often.

"Speeding is always a big problem and with the newer vehicles they operate so nicely and run so smoothly, that often times people just get a little carried away."

Drivers are reminded as always not to drink and drive this May Long weekend either as Police will increase checkstops and be on the lookout for impaired and distracted drivers.
