After the freeze we saw earlier this winter there's was no doubt area river's had a thick layer of ice, but with recent Chinook weather, that's not a sure thing.

River's are always dangerous says Clayton Rutberg with the High River Fire Department.

"With all the moving water and stuff like that, the ice can be very unpredictable. You know you might have thick ice in one spot and go to another spot and have no ice. With ice being so unpredictable, it's just a good idea to stay off that ice, and stay away from it."

Lake ice around the region remains in good shape despite last week's warmer temperatures.

The snow on top melted, which made for slippery conditions, but it's since re-frozen and will continue to grow in thickness over the next few weeks.

Rutberg says those heading onto the river's either skiing, walking or on snow mobile's are always at risk of going through the ice.
