It's been said for years, the snow pack in the mountains doesn't have a direct impact on flooding in High River.

The Director of Emergency Management with the Town Carly Benson says she understands residents casting an eye westward.

"Snow does have a factor in flooding, but just in that if it's covering the ground, the ground is frozen which means it can't absorb moisture," Benson says. "We're more interested in the snow pack in June because that's when we tend to get these heavy rainfall events."

Residents may have noticed the Highwood River is up and while she's not concerned about it, Benson says it's a good reminder to check to make sure sump pumps are working since ground water levels do rise at this time of year.

The warm weather over the last while has made a big impact on getting rid of some of the snow in the mountains.

Benson told council Monday, just in the last week, the snow pack has come down from 100 percent of normal in some areas to just 13 percent of normal.
