The Town of Okotoks has some big plans for the new retaining wall on Veterans Way.

It's been decided that a visual memorial should make the retaining wall it's new home.

Culture and Heritage Manager Allan Boss says the theme the town chose only made sense.

"We held a number of discussions and decided that perhaps some sort of memorial should be created on that wall. Especially since the changing with the name of Centre Avenue to Veterans Way and having the Frederick Price Park right down the hill, it just made sense to have something that had a veterans theme."

Boss says he doesn't know yet what form of artwork the wall will contain, "it may be a mural, it may be sculptural, it may be light, I am not 100% sure. We are going to put out a request for proposals and see what comes back and then we will form a committee...and then we will make a decision on the memorial that will go up there."

The request for proposals are planned to be sent out later this summer, possibly even September and the committee hopes to have a decision by late fall.

The unveiling of the new memorial will take place during Summer 2017, Boss says, "the installation will happen in 2017 to align with Canada's 150th birthday, so maybe Canada Day we will have an official reveal to help us celebrate not only our veterans and memorialize them but celebrate Canada's 150th birthday as well."

The project is for any artist that has a great idea that will embellish the wall and commemorate Canada's hero's.
