There were several agenda items at the High River town council meeting on Monday,, and the former Nurses Residence was one of them.

High River Parks and Planning Supervisor Kim Unger says due to the flood the sandstone structure is in need of extensive repairs.

"The Nurses residence was damaged by the flood, and the owners have applied for funding through the Alberta Historic Resource Foundation. They received some funding and now they're ready to go forward to do some repairs to the foundation of that structure. Those repairs are absolutely integral to maintaining that historic resource, so we're really happy that work is going to go forward."

She says the way the by-law was written, approval from Council was required for anything that needed a building permit or development agreement.

"Our by-laws are not written like that anymore, that by-law was written in 2013. Now to expedite any processes, we have an internal approval process so we don't have to go to Council. We got this approval while the building permit was running, in fact I think we're even ahead of the building permit with this one. The last thing we want to do is slow anybody down."
