The Foothills lost one of it's longest serving public servants Monday, March 18, with the passing of Pekiso's Roy McLean.

McLean had served on M.D. of Foothills Council for over two decades, 10 years of which as Reeve.

Current Foothills County Reeve, Larry Spilak, says McLean left a powerful legacy.

"He was a gentleman, he was a statesman and a diplomat all in one. And I have to say as Reeve, Roy together with his wife Lenore of course, represented our M.D. with a class and a presence that set a new standard for our Council."

Spilak says McLean was a great teacher to him.

"You know, I learned everything from Roy when it came to taking over. I served as his Deputy Reeve for three years before I became the Reeve. And everything I learned as far as procedure and how to operate hearing's etc, I learned from Roy. So he was an excellent teacher."

He says you could always count on McLean for a good dose of common sense.

"Absolutely! You could always count on his opinions. And you know, with a guy like Roy, you didn't need a contract. A handshake was everything you needed and that's the way he lived his life and that's why we respected him so much."

So far there's no word on funeral arrangements for McLean.
