People wearing red shirts walking the streets of High River on May 31, and a bake sale on the May Long Weekend, was all part of an effort to raise some funds for a good cause.

The 13TH Annual Support the Cause Walk took place in High River, Okotoks and across Western Canada wherever there are Western Financial Group locations.

They were on target to raise $250,000 for their charity arm, Western Communities Foundation.

Marketing Writer Shannon Galley says the head office in High River has raised almost $12,000 of their $14,000 goal.

"We are really excited to have that large amount to give back to our communities again this year," said Galley.

How the money is spent in each location is decided by the employees.

"We go out to our employees and do a vote on where they would like to see that money go," said Galley.

There is also a draw later to see where a $5,000 infrastructure grant goes.

One of those grants was used to help Highwood High School build two new changing rooms on the football fields.

The walk has also raised money for happy trails, local students, and playgrounds projects for High River schools.

The local High River office raised over $2,000 by Wednesday with the combination of the walk and a bake sale held after the Little Britches Parade.
