The long weekend has arrived and that means a lot of vehicles on the provinces highways.

RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs plan to be on the roads as well hoping to keep everyone safe.

Sergeant Brent Hawker with the High River RCMP says they expect traffic to increase as the day rolls on.

"It's unusual to have Canada's birthday celebrated on a Friday, which gives us a long weekend on a Friday instead of a Monday, but certainly like other long weekends we have to take care while we're travelling on the roadway," he says.

He says there's lots of wildlife on the roads along with people towing trailers and fifth wheels so it's important to take your time, signal your turns and and avoid distractions like phones.
