A social media posting that went viral last weekend about the assault of a youth at her residence in Okotoks on November 18th has been proven unfounded.

Following a thorough investigation, the RCMP have determined that this event did not take place as originally reported.

This investigation is closed and the RCMP are not seeking any suspect, or further information.

In a Facebook posting, the complainants mother says the event did not happen.

"As of recent we have discovered that the event did not indeed occur. Our daughter has been admitted to the hospital for a mental assessment and observation. We do apologize on behalf of our daughter for putting the community on alert. This trauma has affected our family more than we can express. We do not wish to make any further comments at this time, and we ask that we be given the time needed to help our family heal and process everything."

According to RCMP, social media played a big role in the case.

“This reported situation became magnified as a result of social media” says Corporal Darryl Dawkins of the Okotoks General Investigation Section.  “It is a reminder to the community that the RCMP is committed to and will diligently investigate all complaints and report on them accurately.”

Further information in relation to this incident will not be made available.
