Motorists are being asked to give themselves plenty of time to get where they're going over the holidays, put down the phone and don't drink and drive.

The RCMP says five people were killed and 135 people were injured in crashes from Christmas Eve 2014 to January 3 of this year.

Property damage was reported in 1,570 crashes.

Seven people were charged during that time with impaired driving causing bodily harm and 157 people had to deal with impaired charges of one type or another while another 101 were hit with roadside suspensions.

There were 256 thefts from vehicles and 285 vehicles were stolen during that time.
