Tax season is approaching and scammers are looking to collect.

High River RCMP Staff Sergeant Robin Alexander says if someone calls saying that you'll go to jail if you don't pay up, don't fall for it.

"People have called the police asking, is this legitimate, am I going to be arrested?"

Alexander says, they're trying to get the word out that the CRA doesn't make phone calls.

He says we need to be careful when disclosing our personal information, and if it doesn't feel right it probably isn't.

Alexander says scammers are opportunistic and hard to catch.

"They're extremely difficult to investigate, quite often they originate overseas which really complicates things. If you fall victim to the scam there's very little police can do."

He says there are resources available to help keep us informed like the anti fraud website provided by the federal government.

"Never provide your personal information unless you're sure who you're dealing with. If you're uncomfortable and something doesn't sound right it probably isn't, and your first step would be to contact police."
