A High River homeowner is very happy with town council's decision on a mistake with her municipal taxes.

Denise Regan realized her home was being assessed for 336 square feet more than what was actually there over the last 15 or so years since she bought it.

She says the mistake came to light when she asked about appealing last year's assessment and was told her home had a developed basement which, she says, was wrong.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says council did the right thing in refunding her money she was asking for.

"She made a very good presentation and in my mind, mistakes are allowed, mistakes happen, if you don't think you make mistakes you're delusional, we're no different," he says.

Regan had asked for $2,368, taking out the portion she'd paid over the years for the Foothills Foundation and school taxes.

However councillor Emile Blokland made the motion to refund her the full amount, $3,749.40.

"All of us as ratepayers expect to be treated fairly and taxes fairly and when we're not it's up to us (council) to make it right," Blokland says.

Regan says it was heartwarming that council was willing to listen to her side and willing to  uphold the town's high morals.
