Nanton Artist Shannon Lawlor, who created the Calgary Stampede poster for 2017, has been having a great time at the event.

She created the oil painting that was used in the poster this year featuring a heavy horse team with a border made of ranching brands.

She said it was a true honour, especially with it being Canada's 150th birthday, and the 105th anniversary of the Stampede.

"And also it is the 25th anniversary of the Heavy Horse pull at the Calgary Stampede which is the focal point of the 2017 poster," said Lawlor. "It is a nice year to be involved in it and I am very, very honoured."

To create it she met with Stampede President David Sibbald, they came up with some ideas, and he wanted it to resemble an old time poster.

She did a bunch sketches and a quarter scale mock up of the painting, and after a few changes she did the large painting that is on display at the Western Showcase and will remain in the Stampede collection.

"The experience has been very different but very positive with being the poster artist this year."
