The High River Library is looking to put a patio and living wall on their property to make better use of some of their space.

Deb Gardner with the library says they have a perfect place in mind for this new project.

"The library has a space. It's on the flat roof and it's on the southern end of the library. It's kind of been a neglected space over time, and so in looking at making spaces more available and accessible and maybe even multipurpose, we were looking at trying to do this."

She says the library currently has help as they try to get the funding in place for this addition.

"We've been working with the town on this project and with the Friends of the Library. We're working our way to getting the funding together to make that a more accessible space in terms of maybe patio furniture and, you know, having the recycling bins and so on there."

Gardner notes they would also like to put in a living wall.

"At the same time we were hoping to put in like a living wall." She explains, "You could be on the flat roof but perhaps you might not be climbing up on the other roof because that's just not safe. So, a living wall would be put there to discourage people climbing on the roof. This would be an attractive alternative to fencing."

Gardner says the Friends of the Library and the library board have designated funds toward the project, they have put a proposal into the town, and the Friends of the Library have an application in to the provincial government.
