Poppies are blooming all over Canada as we prepare to honour those who fought for their country and many who paid the ultimate price.

High River Mayor Craig Snodgrass says wearing a poppy means something different to each individual.

"It's going sound cliche' but it is what it is, and these guys fought for the freedoms that we have today and it's recognizing that,  but it's also supporting our veterans," he says.

He says a lot of older veterans fought in dirty, grimy battles on the ground compared to the technological warfare that's being waged today.

Poppy donation boxes are available at stores all over the foothills and will remain there until November 11.
