A new poll shows if an election were held today in Alberta the PC Party would likely form the next government.

The poll by Lethbridge College’s Citizen Society Research Lab, conducted during the first week of October shows the PC's with 38.4% support compared to 25.7% for the wildrose and 19.7% for the governing NDP.

A big part of the surge is the stance of PC Party Leadership Candidate Jason Kenney to unite the PC's and Wildrose under one banner.

Highwood PC Constituency Association President R.J. Sigurdson says right now they're lukewarm to the idea at best.

"As far as uniting goes, like I've said before to quite a few people, the logistics of closing down both parties and merging into one. I mean, the idea sounds great. I'm just not sure how easy it would be to get both parties together on one page."

The poll shows voters are very much behind the idea of a "United Right," with 66% saying they're in favour of it.

The poll also shows strong support among party members to merge the parties.

79% of PC members are in favour, while 81.9% of Wildrose Party members back a merger.

Kenney, along with the other declared candidates, Donna Kennedy-Glans, Byron Nelson, Sandra Jansen and Richard Starke, will face party voters at the leadership convention Friday, March 17, 2017 in Calgary.
