Skating outside and taking in Christmas lights are all coming together into one great event this year.

A new outdoor rink is set to open in the next few days at George Lane Park and the Christmas display lights will be lighting up the night.

Organizer of all things Christmas Ted Dawson says it is going to be great.

"The skating rink is coming along," said Dawson.

Clean Harbours is trucking in the water, Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Lute's Building Centre and all the service clubs chipped in on work and supplies.

"The Kinsmen club did the bulk of the work in terms of installing the rink."

"The Rotary Club and The Highwood Lions Club have been instrumental in getting all of this together. So it is really exciting to see it going in," said Dawson.

They are hoping to have it operational by the weekend of the 18th.

"It truly is an old-fashioned community skating rink, obviously you skate on it on your own risk. There will be shovels set up on the first and third base dugouts and if there is a little bit of snow on it then I guess the first people to come down and skate we are asking you to be snow angels and clear the snow off so everyone can enjoy it."

Because it is designed for fun skating so organizers are also asking that no hockey be played on it.

"Simply because we don't want folks having to get off the surface to chase the pucks or to take the chance that a puck would hit the displays and break the lights."

The ice will be lit up at night by patio lights supplied by Canadian Tire and Fortis installed a plug in for lights, and it will be run separate from the Christmas Light Displays.

The ice will be in as long as the weather allows it.

"It is really exciting because it is something the whole community can enjoy and hopefully people from outside of High River will take a drive out and enjoy it."
