Dirt was flying at the ground breaking for the Southbank Medical Centre in Okotoks on Wednesday.

Town of Okotoks staff, including mayor Bill Robertson, were on hand for the event at the lot for the new facility located next to Costco.

The building, through the partnership of Southridge Village Chiro and Pinnacle Medical Centres, will house a chiropractic clinic, physiotherapy clinic, and medical clinic.

Paul Hicke, chiropractor and owner of Southridge Village Chiro, says he'll be moving his practice into the new space.

"We're going to move the practice over into the building," he says. "We currently have chiropractic and massage then we're going to bring in physiotherapy, and the Pinnacle Medical group is coming in and they're going to be doing a pharmacy and a medical clinic that will be able to handle up to six full time medical doctors."

Hicke adds there's also plans for the clinic to house a naturopath, dentist, and diagnostic imaging.

He says the medical centre will help to meet the growing demand for physicians in Okotoks.

"A lot of my patients have expressed that they're currently seeing medical doctors in Calgary so we're really looking forward to being able to have all their medical services here in town."

According to Hicke the facility will cost into the millions of dollars and cover 16,000 square feet in total between the top and bottom floors.

Construction is expected to be completed in January with the grand opening in early 2017.
