The Town of Okotoks could be heading into the new year with a balanced budget.

The proposed budget for 2016 sees revenues of around 52.8 million dollars and no new debt being added. The revenue breaks down to 44.5 million going towards expenses, 3 million towards debt, and about 5 million towards reserves and capital funds.

Tanya Thorn, Okotoks Town Councillor, says the budget currently includes a slight increase in taxes.

"Our non residential tax rate is staying the same as it was last year so that's for our business sector so it'll stay at 38 percent above residential rate. Right now, it's a proposal of about a 1.6 percent tax increase, but where things sit right now it's back to the finance and budget committee in council to take a look at all the proposals.

Thorn adds the proposal sees the Town hiring three new RCMP officers which she says allows them to get caught up with population growth.

There's a couple capital projects in the proposal that stand out to Thorn for 2016.

"The water spray park, there's a proposal for an expansion there so adding another phase and washrooms up there," she says. "Probably the biggest capital we have on the go is running serving to the 40 acres we bought. It's a 4.8 million dollar servicing project for us to get services up there so we can start construction of the school in the fall next year."

According to Thorn the proposal is a very conservative budget with this years economic uncertainties taken into account.
