Okotokians no longer have to throw out all of their styrofoam anymore, as the Town's Eco Centre will now recycle certain types.

Waste Services Manager with the Town, Paul Lyons, says the move is part of the Town's sustainability goals.

"The Town recognized that in order to continue to achieve our objective of 80 per cent diversion of waste to the Landfill, that we need to always be looking for new items we can be removing from the waste stream."

There is a catch though, there's only certain types of styrofoam that can go to the Eco Centre.

Lyons asks that residents choosing to recycle any Styrofoam bring it into the Eco Centre, as it's still not allowed to go into the blue bins.

"Currently we are accepting only clean, packaging Styrofoam at the Eco Centre." Lyons says "It's important to note, that this material is not acceptable in the blue recycling cart."

There is also a limit to which kinds of Styrofoam can be accepted.

Right now, Lyons says they're only accepting packaging Styrofoam, like the kind that comes out of your brand new TV box.

"This doesn't include the Styrofoam packing peanuts, it doesn't include any colored Styrofoam, and right now it doesn't include Styrofoam coffee cups or meat packing."

If you have questions about what's acceptable or what can be recycled, you can bring it into the Eco Centre, where they will sort through it with you.
