Okotoks Municipal Enforcement is the latest in Okotoks emergency services to now carry Naloxone.

While RCMP and the Okotoks Fire Department are able to administer the injection, municipal enforcement officers carry Narcan which is the nasal spray version of Naloxone.

Naloxone or Narcan is a medication used with opioid overdoses.

Scott Roberts, director of protective services for the Town of Okotoks, says it's important officers carry Narcan as they're sometimes first on the scene.

"Municipal Enforcement officers are first line responders so there are times when they arrive on the scene of an incident prior to RCMP or our fire services, or Alberta Health for that matter, and being first aid trained if it's known what the ailment is with the person who may be unconscious they can begin the treatment sooner and potentially save a life."

Roberts says carrying the medication is key in being prepared.

"We know that it will come to us in time, we're hopeful that it won't become very prevalent in our community, but certainly the trends across Canada are that fentanyl is becoming a drug of choice amongst drug users and certainly Okotoks isn't immune from drug use, it's there, I don't think it's a big problem for us yet but we just want to be prepared and ready for the next challenge."

Municipal Enforcement and the Okotoks Fire Department received training from Alberta Health Services on how to use the kits.
