An Okotoks mother is reaching out to the community with a message of change, acceptance and love after her two sons experienced racist comments and actions at a school in town.

Dianne Doyle-Lynch a mother of two mixed race children 7 and 9 years old says what was labelled as a joke by her son's classmate she calls ignorance

She says on Facebook "The words that made other kids at the table laugh, made my child's heart ache."

Doyle-Lynch says this isn't the first time something like this has happened at her son's school.

"There was a time when my oldest was blocked from entering a bathroom because he was black, he was told he wasn't wanted there." She says "He handled it so well and said you really have to be careful with your words, I belong everywhere I go and please step out of my way."

Earlier this week a few kids at Lynch's school made a racist joke, and the 9 year old had to stand up for himself and his family.

He went home visibly upset and after a night of reflection and no sleep, Mrs. Dianne Doyle-Lynch decided she would start the change that she wants to see. She created a Facebook video which is aptly named "A Mother's Plea." She calls for people to have a conversation with each other, and with their children to put an end to hate and racism, and instead embrace each other for their differences.

"If we can walk through life celebrating our differences of others, and the differences that we hold ourselves then the world is going to be such a nice place to be in." Doyle-Lynch says "It's not enough to hope somebody else will have the conversation. We each need to have a conversation with each other and with our children."

While many people don't believe that racism has a place in our community, it still happens. Doyle-Lynch says it's time to put an end to it.

"It is time for it just to be done and for us to just look at each other as different people, and celebrate how different we are and how wonderful it is to be different from one another. Whether it's because of race, gender, heritage, or sexual orientation. We're allowed to be different, we should celebrate being different instead of hating each other because we're different."
