Helping serve seniors in the Okotoks Community since 1990.

2015 marks the 25 year anniversary of the Meals on Wheels program in Okotoks.

Volunteers preparing another round of Meals on Wheels. The organization is always looking for more to help out.

Centre Manager Diane Knittle says Meals on Wheels has had quite the journey that was started by just four volunteers.

"Initially it was done out of a restaurant owned by Lomenda's," she says. "Then when they weren't able to do that and the Sandstone Lodge was being built around 1990, the Foothills Foundation was approached and see if they would be able to do it."

And the rest is history.

Knittle who has been with Meals on Wheels for a number of years says it is a very rewarded experience helping provide meals for those who may not or can't cook for themselves anymore.

"We're providing a service to the community thats greatly needed, and it enables a fair number of seniors to remain in their homes, where they may not be able to that otherwise, or at least do it with their nutritional needs being met at some level of comfort."

With the official anniversary of Meals on Wheels not till fall, Knittle says volunteers are always needed especially with a low amount of delivery drivers in the summer, but there's always a high demand when snow starts to hit the ground.

"In the summertime its a little bit less," she says. "But in the wintertime we certainly go increased in the numbers of meals that we're doing per day, so I don't see the need going away, I actually see it increasing."
