Okotoks Mayor Bill Robertson is "all in" when it comes to the "On-It" Regional Transit Service that comes to the Foothills starting Tuesday, October 11.

Robertson says he's hoping the two year pilot program is a success, and one that can be grown and expanded to see bus service not just to and from Calgary, but around the Foothills as well.

"I think we'll be able to tell where the system needs to be tweaked. Expanded perhaps in some areas. Perhaps reduced in other areas. But that's what a pilot's all about, evaluating it to see what's the best path forward."

Robertson says one obvious expansion would be increased services during the day between High River and Okotoks allowing those without other transportation options like seniors to be able to go shopping, or others able to come to High River for hospital visits.

Robertson, who's also the Chair of the Calgary Regional Partnership, says at least in Okotoks there's a good buzz about the service.

"Over the years people have said 'What about transit? I don't have a vehicle! You need to get some transit, I need some mobility' and so on. And not only those people that choose not to have a car, there are also those people who are no longer able to drive. So, it meets the needs of a number of citizens who we want to be included as much as possible."

High River Mayor Craig Snodgrass is a little less enthused about the service, but says he wants to see what the demand is over the next couple of years from High River residents, before committing yearly cash to it on a full time, permanent basis.

The service will run between Turner Valley, Black Diamond, Okotoks, High River and the City of Calgary.
