The Okotoks Fire Department was kept busy last week responding to 22 different emergency responses including a suspicious fire at Foothills Composite High School.

Deputy Fire Chief Pat Macisaac says the fire is still under investigation.

"It was deliberately set, close to a storage room," he says. "It was easily extinguished by the staff and there was injuries and only minor damage but our investigators worked with the RCMP and its being treated as a criminal matter."

As for the rest of the week, the department continued to be in the community as they've ramped up their free home inspection program.

Macissac says they've had a good response of homes express interest in the inspections since they started them in October.

"To date we've done over 40 home inspections, the fire fighters will come to a home and just review some basic safety measures, they'll do a quick inspections of alarms, fire extinguishers if you have them, we'll test your smoke detectors, check around furnaces for fire hazards."

Not only are the fire fighters helping educate homes but even with Fire Prevention Week long over, the crew is visiting more schools or having more schools come visit them to learn about fire safety.

"We did a number of hall tours and education sessions with schools and pre-schools," he says. "We saw over 120 kids last week."
