The Town of High River will start building a new off-leash dog park in the near future.

The planned space for the development of the park, is the open field directly south of the Canadian Tire parking lot.

Park Supervisor for the Town of High River, Tannas Webb, says we already have an off-leash park, but it leaves much to be desired.

"It is extremely tiny, and there has been an appetite in town to get a larger space. Our current off-leash park is good for owners looking to socialize their pets, but we think this new addition will give owners and their dogs, plenty of space to run and walk."

Webb says the approved budget amendment will go towards making the undeveloped land hospitable for its new visitors.

"Just to get it up and operational and amenitize the space, it will come to $26,600 to do that, and some operating and upkeep costs moving forward."

Webb says the costs will also go towards some extra features, to make the park more accessible.

"There's some fencing repairs that need to be done, because we want to make sure there is no danger to the dogs or the owners, there's mowing, cleanup, pedestrian cross-walks, garbages and benches we also plan on adding to the space."

No word yet on when development will start.

Webb says the Town is working on the planning for the construction.
