Family and Community Support Services and Our High River hope community members will help revitalize the Culture Centre on April 15-16.

FCSS Community Support Worker Caitland Asmundson says they're planning to paint and clean the Culture Centre, and possibly put up new artwork as well.

"The Culture Centre is a community space that we have here in High River and it's getting a little bit dated. So what we're hoping to do is gather people from the community together and have them come out. We're going to paint and clean the Culture Centre and put up some new artwork and stuff like that hopefully."

She says this is a chance for people in the community to gather and create the kind of space that they want.

"We're hoping to see the community be able to kind of take more ownership over that building. Right now it is somewhat of an underutilized space and we know that people in the community keep asking for designated community spaces. So this is like kind of an opportunity for people to come together and actually put in the work to see what they want to happen with is really cool."

Asmundson says at the last Community Cafe people brainstormed ways to make the Culture Centre more vital such as cleaning it up and creating more wall space for possible art exhibits or art classes. She says the space can be used by non-profits for events and can be rented for private functions as well. She says the goal is to bring people together and create a space that's more welcoming for community members.

"And then our hope is that actually we are able to use that space as like a designated community space so that it's open during the week, people can come in and see it, they can use it, they can have meeting together there and use it as a space to talk about other ways to get involved in the community."

Asmundson says this is just the first phase of what FCSS hopes to be a couple different phases of revitalizing the Culture Centre. She says this phase they will focus on the building's inside then and hopefully work on it's outside and backyard over the summer. The Culture Centre is located at 251 9th Ave SW, next door to the Charles Clark Medical Centre.
