The Town of High River has put out an update on the dismantling of the town's old water tower.

A pre-demolition inspection and risk assessment for the approximately 102 year old tower has been done.

Because materials that are now considered to be harmful under Provincial Legislation were used originally, the project requires special handling procedures.

The site has been registered with Alberta Environment and while the park and playground are closed, further sampling and testing of the tower and surrounding grounds will be done.

Once that's complete, a contract will be prepared with the proper health and safety protocols included.

The tower should be removed by the end of February 2017 and it's hoped by the end of May landscaping will be completed.

The Kinette club of High River is currently raising funds to help build a new park once the tower is removed.
