You might see some cute kids in uniform around town in the near future as the High River Legion will now be home to the Foothills branch of the Navy League Cadets.

Parent liaison, Ken Perkins, says the Cadets used to parade out of the High River Airport when the group was first formed seven years ago, but had to relocate.

"When they lost that facility, they were forced to go to the Okotoks area, and last year they were in Aldersyde, but now with cooperation from the High River Legion, we have the opportunity to once again parade here in High River," he says. "And we think our participation in the community is going to go up substantially as a result."

Perkins says having your children in the program is a great way to build their confidence, increase their teamwork skills, and have them be involved in the community.

"They get to practice drill, so marching and formation and so on, and that helps to build some teamwork," Perkins says. "And then they spend most of their time working on citizenship and skill building. They learn things like first aid, rope work, parts of a ship, they learn some navigation, map readingall those kinds of things."

The organization is now looking for new recruits and Perkins says he hopes parents and kids will come out to an information and registration night on Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the High River Legion.

"We'd love for kids ages nine to 12 to come out and take a look at the program. Their parents will typically come out with them for the first night and they'll hang out and get to hear from the Commanding Officer what the program is all about and see if it fits them," he says. "Returning cadets will be there that night and often the kids will pair off and get to ask the existing cadets what the program is all about and why they might be interested in it."

The fee to join the organization is $100 for the entire year, which includes the cost of the uniform. Perkins says they're able to keep the cost down so low because of support from local companies, grants, volunteer support and various fundraisers.
