A new waste water treatment plant opening was one of the highlights for the Town of Nanton in 2017.

Mayor Jennifer Handley, who was a former councillor and was voted in as the mayor in the fall elections, says the plant is their number one pride and glory.

"As far as one of the biggest things we're proud of," said Handley. "It is kind of surreal. It kind of consumed us for almost three-and-a-half years. It was everything we did. We needed to make sure the old plant was working while we were trying to figure out solutions for the new plant."

She adds it was a lot of work dealing with Alberta Environment and Alberta Transportation.

"Even touring Southern Alberta waste treatment plants across Southern Alberta trying to find out the best fit."

But now they can relax because the plant is up and running and not causing headaches like the old out-of-date plant did.

"The fact that we no longer have to worry if our plant is going to survive the night, or survive the weather changes or power bumps it is self sufficient."
