The Nanton RCMP are warning residents about a scam making the rounds in Southern Alberta.

Nanton RCMP Constable Todd Olson says it involves the STARS lottery.

"We've been receiving complaints from the general public in regards to a STARS lottery scam, stating that basically people have won an item or money and that they need to send money to claim their prize, or the people will come to their residence, and they'll have to give them money of course to claim their prize."

Olson says anytime someone tells you you need to pay them for your prize, that's a huge red flag.

STARS lottery says they do not call and ask for any funds to claim prizes for their lottery.

He says if you get a call that doesn't seem right feel free to contact them, or go to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.
