One local mayor has decided not to toss his hat into the ring for another round.

Nanton Mayor Rick Everett says he had to decide if he had the energy to go for four more years.

"I've given a lot of my personal time, and my families time to the town, because I love the town," said Everett, "And I thought it was time for me to spend some time with my family, to catch up on some of my hobbies that I backed off on for four years and finally maybe retire."

He said council has done a lot of work over the last four years including building a waste water treatment plan, improving the quality of water at the water treatment plant, replacing sidewalks and painting lines on the roads.

"We have done a lot of policies and changes and updates, we have financial policies in place now that are really important to how we invest our money. And on top of that we have sold 48 lots in three and a half years."

And his advice for anyone thinking of running in the municipal election as mayor or councillor is to be a team player.

"You learn to have your say in the council, you don't have to agree with each other, you just need to make sure your perspective is presented and secondly once a decisions is made as a team member whether you were on side with that or not at the start when you walk out of the room you are all onside with the decision."

He added it is important to have a diversity of opinions in a council but if you go back to the community and say you don't agree with an opinion you create a rift in the community.

Everett says he has done a lot of different things in his life but his time as the mayor is what he considers to be the best job he ever had.

"Where do you get the opportunity to work with 2200 people and look at the what is the ability to create a vision for all of those people and get them to move forward."
