For a lot of people driving through the Town of Nanton it is just one more place they need to slow down on their way to somewhere else.

But the Town is working on a couple of projects that will hopefully change peoples minds.

Marianne Morrison, director of corporate services with the town, says she's hoping some new signs will entice drivers to stop and have a look around.

Signs have changed a lot since the last time it was undertaken to update them, 20 years ago.

"The whole concept is to move from what they call unrooted signs, which is what we have now, " said Morrison.

She added the purpose of the new signs is to make people feel like they need to stop.

"To grab peoples interest, not just give them information, but actually make them feel like they want to stop in the community, that's what is important about our signage."

The signs all have to work together from when you first drive into town, to parking signs, to the banners on the light posts to the directional signs that move pedestrians through the downtown.

She said it is important to create a feeling where travelers want to stop, then show them where to stop and once you have them out of their cars you need to show them where to go for great experiences.

"That in a nut shell is the signage project," Morrison said.

In the first year of the project the town is planning to install new banners and parking signs up,

The next two or three years, funding permitting, will include a large billboard, with just pictures, and directional signs for pedestrians.
